43. How to Repair with our Tweens and Teens

Tess Connolly LCSW talks about how to repair our relationship with our tweens and teens. She offers 5 strategies for repairing our relationships with our children and gives examples and the language to help guide your understanding. 

  • Tess talks about the shift in relationships as your child reaches middle school and the teen years. 
  • Tess talks about acknowledging the conflict that you have had with your tween or teen and  bringing your focus to your behavior and language and taking responsibility for your actions and what you said or did.
  • The importance of having family meetings and having that space to talk about ways you can have healthier relationships with each other. 
  • Know that this may take some time to get used to and give your tween and teen the space to talk and say what they are feeling and for you to take the time to listen. 
  • Tess gives some examples and strategies of what you can do while practicing these ways of communication with your tween and teen. 
  • Tess talks about the importance of patience and that all the strategies that she has shared are the ‘ideal’ but you are both learning how to do this and the important part is for you to stay consistent. 
  • The need for professional help if you have significant unhealthy patterns of continued fights and arguments without repair.
